I know what you’re thinking…pink eggs?!?! Stick with me. I’m not talking about bright pink eggs. While most people are familiar with the classic white and brown eggs, some chicken breeds surprise us with pastel shades, including the enchanting pink egg.
Before we get into specific breeds, it’s important to understand that a chicken’s egg color is determined primarily by its genetics. The color of the eggshell is influenced by the breed for sure, but more specifically, by the hen’s bloom she puts on the egg. So without further adieu, here you go! And I would say out of any of these breeds, the Silkie is your best bet for pink eggs!
Easter Egger
Easter Eggers are a colorful crossbreed known for their “surprise eggs.” These birds are the definition of variety—laying eggs in shades of blue, green, cream and occasionally, pink.
Personality: Friendly, hardy and great for families.
Egg Production: Up to 280 eggs per year.
Our Experience: All of my Easter Eggers have laid green or blue eggs, but every now and then, you’ll hear of one producing light pink eggs.
Easter Eggers are an easy addition to any flock because of their temperament and colorful contributions to your egg basket.
Olive Egger
Olive Eggers are a hybrid of the Araucana and brown-laying breeds. As the name suggests, they are known for their olive green eggs. However, due to their genetics, some Olive Eggers can surprise you with pinkish or pale-tinted eggs.
Personality: Curious, active and hardy.
Egg Production: Up to 260 eggs per year.
The Twist: While olive is their signature egg color, lighter shades can occur like pink, especially if their parent breeds include light-bloom genetics.
Plymouth Rock
Plymouth Rock’s are a staple in American backyard flocks. They’re known for their beautiful barred plumage, gentle personalities and reliable brown egg production.
Personality: Calm, friendly and adaptable to any environment.
Egg Production: Up to 250 eggs per year.
Pink Potential: Occasionally, their brown eggs can have a faint pinkish tint. This happens when their bloom softens the brown color, creating a rosy hue.
Happy, my favorite chicken ever, is a Plymouth Rock! While I’ve never seen her lay a pink egg, her personality alone makes her the star of the coop.
Silkies
Silkies are among the silliest breeds of chicken out there. With their fluffy plumage, black skin and sweet dispositions, they’re often a favorite for families.
Personality: Silly, chatty and prone to going broody.
Egg Production: Up to 120 small eggs per year.
Egg Colors: Silkies can lay cream, white, brown and sometimes pink-tinted eggs.
If you’re serious about getting pink eggs, Silkies are probably your best bet. Plus, their quirky personalities will bring endless entertainment to your flock.
