As you probably know by now, chickens are a huge part of our family’s life! It may have started as my dream (haha!), but my family has embraced all my crazy ideas. Raising kids and chickens together has become a beautiful part of our life.
When our kids were young, I worked hard to teach them healthy eating, responsibility and respect. So far, so good! We aren’t perfect, but with five years left before our little Wings fly the nest, we’re making the most of every day together.
Why Raising Chickens Is Great for Kids
In addition to dogs, chickens have added a lot of fun and learning to our family’s life. Raising animals has given us plenty to talk about, work on together and laugh over. Pets are wonderful teachers—our kids have learned about the value of life, responsibility and even the heartache of losing a pet. Over the years, we’ve raised everything from dogs and rabbits to goats and even a few birds
Are There Chicken Breeds That Are Best for Kids?
One question I get asked all the time is whether there are specific chicken breeds that are best for kids. While I believe you can bond with almost any breed if you put in the time, there are definitely some breeds that stand out for being friendly and great for families.
Having friendly chickens is important for us because we have a lot of visitors, including kids. I want every guest to have a positive experience, so we focus on raising calm and gentle breeds.
Recommended Chicken Breeds for Families
If you’re just starting out or looking for breeds that are especially good with kids, here are a few that have worked well for us:
These breeds not only lay great eggs but are super friendly. They seek out attention even when I don’t have treats, love to be held, and are great around kids.
No Roosters, Please (Mostly)
Overall, I have a no rooster rule. I know there are some pretty friendly roosters out there! But, for our family, we’ve only had a couple. I currently have three little Mille Fleur d’Uccles roosters that are so far super friendly. If they start to show any aggression, however, they’re out. Don’t be afraid to adjust your flock to suit your family.
Raise Your Flock From Chicks
In my experience, raising your flock from the chick stage is the best way to bond with them. Chickens have unique personalities, and you’ll get to know them better the more time you spend together. It’s a great way to create a friendly, trusting flock.
Building Priceless Memories With Chickens
Our kids have had so much fun naming the chickens, helping with the hard work, and sneaking in chicken snuggles when they can. Raising chickens is something we’ve never regretted. The eggs are great, but the laughs and memories we’ve made are truly priceless.
Until next time,
