Merry Christmas, everyone! Today, I’m excited to share one of my family’s favorite holiday recipes—our delicious chewy and gooey gingerbread cookies. They’re a classic treat, and baking them always reminds me of the incredible bakers in my family.

When I cook, I just add things in here and there where I feel like it. But baking? Baking is a science, and my great grammas, grammas and mom have figured out how to get these cookies down pat. I love this recipe because there aren’t a bunch of different measurements. It’s easy and straightforward. That’s my kind of baking!

Family-Favorite Gingerbread Cookie Recipe

Here’s the recipe that’s been passed down through generations in my family:

  • 1 C. Sugar

  • 1 C. Sorghum

  • 1 C. Shortening

  • 1 C. sour Milk (regular is fine)

  • 5 C. flour

  • 1 tsp. Ginger

  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon

  • 1 tsp. Soda

  • 1 tsp. Baking power

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.

  2. Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl until well combined.

  3. Roll the dough into small balls, then roll each ball in sugar.

  4. Place the balls on a baking sheet and press them flat with a fork.

  5. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Be careful not to overbake—they’re best when they stay soft and chewy!

  6. Let the cookies cool, then enjoy!

A Warm Christmas Wish from My Family to Yours

From my family to yours, Merry Christmas! I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do. Baking these gingerbread cookies has always been one of my favorite holiday traditions, and I love getting to share it with you.

Praying you and your family have a wonderful Christmas celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior.

Until next time,

–The Wing Lady
