Egg Color & Quality: A Guide for Backyard Chicken Keepers

Updated: Sep 27

If you’re a backyard chicken keeper, there is really nothing compared to the eggs your “girls” provide for your family. The eggs are not only delicious, but there is something so fulfilling about raising your own food. Heading out to the coop each day to collect your breakfast is one of the most rewarding parts of chicken keeping!

Egg Color: Understanding the Variety

If you have a variety of chicken breeds, you might notice that the egg colors vary as well. Some people have strong preferences, like those who “only eat white eggs.” If that’s you, make sure you select the right breeds for your desired egg color.

For example, my first flock laid mostly white eggs, while my second flock laid mostly brown ones. Now, I’m eagerly awaiting the first eggs from my current flock, which includes Barred Plymouth Rocks, Buff Brahma Bantams and Black Jersey Giants. These breeds typically lay brown eggs, but eventually, I’d love to add some Easter Eggers to get some blue and green eggs too

Egg Quality: Raising Healthy Chickens for Great-Tasting Eggs

The key to producing high-quality, tasty eggs lies in keeping your flock healthy. I use Chicken E-lixir in their water to promote healthy digestion, boost immunity, and improve eggshell quality. It even contains electrolytes to ensure my girls stay hydrated. The best part? My chickens love the taste—they literally “flock” to it!

Choosing Breeds for Your Environment

If you want a variety of egg colors, it’s definitely possible! But when selecting your chicken breeds, don’t just focus on egg color—consider your climate and environment. Make sure the breeds you choose are well-suited for your location and weather conditions. I picked my current breeds for their winter hardiness and docile personalities, which are important for my Minnesota climate.

Tips for Happy Hens and Great Eggs

  1. Feed quality chicken feed: Make sure your hens get a high-quality feed to support their health and egg production.

  2. Fresh water: Always have fresh, clean water available for your flock.

  3. Improve eggshell strength: If your eggshells seem thin, offer crushed oyster shells to provide extra calcium.

  4. Free-range opportunities: Allow your hens to free-range and forage for plants and insects to enhance their egg quality.

  5. Use Strong Animals Chicken Essentials: These products help promote health and vitality in your flock.

  6. Spend time with your hens: A happy hen is a productive hen, so give them attention and care!
