Back to School Bento Box Lunches

Updated: Sep 27

Bento Box with grapes, carrots and sandwich

The day is finally here. We’ve been working towards this day from the time he started preschool. Our oldest is off to his senior year of high school!

There are a lot of emotions with that, but I know he will have a great year! Our kids are active and involved in sports. It’s important to me to make sure their bodies are fueled well. Our kids eat school lunch some days, but most days they prefer to pack their own lunches.

Why Bento Box Lunches Are Great for Kids

The bento box lunch craze started a few years ago. So, if your kids get sick of the same things every day, these are a great option! There are so many different, healthy items you can put in these boxes.

My only issue is that with growing sports players, they don’t always provide enough spaces! Haha! But, for younger kids, these are excellent! I will pack their main lunch in these little boxes. The one pictured above I picked up at Aldi and it expands! It’s awesome and when they’re done, it collapses to take up less space.

Healthy Bento Box Lunch Ideas

So, what do we put in our boxes? Here’s some ideas to get you started! If your child has access to a microwave, your options increase (mini pizzas anyone?). But, if they don’t, these options below are a great starting point!

  • Sandwiches

  • Fruit

  • Veggies/dip

  • Sliced summer sausage

  • Sliced cheese

  • Crackers

  • Hard boiled eggs (of course!)

  • Nuts/seeds

  • Small cookies

  • Lettuce salad

  • Granola bites

  • Raisins

  • Trail mix

  • Protein balls

  • Jell-O cubes

  • Pickles

  • String cheese

  • Tortilla rollups

  • Lettuce wraps

  • Pasta salad

These are just some fun ideas we like to put in our boxes. I always make sure they have enough protein! After that, I’m not too picky on what they want to put in them as long as it’s not a bunch of junk. Treats are always okay if they’re not the majority!

Keeping It Balanced

It’s important to ensure that your kids have a balanced lunch that includes plenty of protein, fruits and veggies. While treats are okay, focus on making sure the majority of the meal provides the energy they need to get through the day and their after-school activities.

Have an Amazing School Year!

Anyway, I hope you and your family have an incredible school year! We’re raising the next generation and what an exciting one it will be!

Until next time,
